Jon Wyatt Photography - Culbone Wood in North Somerset
Culbone Wood, North Somerset. Due its extremely remote location Culbone Wood was a place for outcasts. In the 13th century disbelievers, the mentally insane and those practising witchcraft were brought here and left to fend for themselves. The community perished. The following century criminals and moral offenders were abandoned here, and many went mad or killed themselves. In the 16th century it became a leper colony. Again, after a brief spell, the community perished.
